Passivhaus

Helping clients design, test, and deliver homes that meet the rigorous Passivhaus standard, ensuring exceptional comfort, ultra-low energy demand, and long-term sustainability.

There are many benefits to pursuing the Passivhaus standard over and above the minimum requirements of the building regulations. The benefits include exceptional energy efficiency, enhanced thermal comfort, superior air quality, and long-term cost savings. Gaining the Passivhaus certification ensures a home that performs reliably and sustainably, while delivering a healthier and more comfortable environment for its occupants.

Achieving the Passivhaus standard can be challenging without careful planning and technical expertise, and many projects risk not meeting the standard due to not engaging early enough in the design process, inadequate attention to airtightness, insulation, ventilation, or thermal bridging, and insufficient coordination during construction. Retrofitting solutions after construction can be costly and disruptive, and without expert guidance, the performance gap between design and reality may remain significant.

Sparran can provide a comprehensive Passivhaus service from feasibility to certification, ensuring that performance, comfort, and energy efficiency are embedded from the outset:

  • Feasibility and early advice - assess whether Passivhaus is achievable for your project, considering site constraints, budget, client goals, and design stage. We explain the standard in practical terms and outline the steps required for certification.
  • Passivhaus design modelling - using the PHPP (Passivhaus Planning Package), we can test design options, evaluating factors such as energy demand, overheating risk, comfort, ventilation, and optimising the design for variables such as orientation, glazing, insulation levels, and thermal bridges.
  • Integration into concept and technical design - it's important to think of Passivhaus as a start-to-finish set of principles which should form an integral part of the design process, avoiding costly revisions later in the process.
  • Certification and construction support - part of the process involves submitting appropriate design and construction documentation to a third party Passivhaus certifier, who will ensure that the construction matches the approved design. On completion, the certifier will inspect the documentation and as-built evidence to confirm whether the building meets the standard, and issue a certificate if and when it does.
  • On-site guidance - provide contractor support on airtightness strategies, sequencing, and building services installation. Interim and final airtightness testing ensures compliance before critical layers are covered and before handover.

By embedding Passivhaus principles throughout design and construction, we minimise risk, maximise energy efficiency, and ensure a high level of occupant comfort.
