Passivhaus (also known as Passive House) is a rigorous building standard focused on energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability. Originating in Germany in the 1990s, it emphasises creating highly insulated, airtight buildings that require very little energy for heating or cooling. Instead of relying on traditional heating systems, Passivhaus designs optimise passive solar gains, natural ventilation, and heat recovery through mechanical ventilation systems. The result is a building that maintains a stable indoor temperature year-round, reduces energy consumption by up to 90% compared to conventional buildings, and provides excellent indoor air quality.
